An acrylic painting of the earth as a crescent with the moon in the foreground based on a photo from the artemis II mission by NASA
Even in Darkness, We Glow

In the middle of my recent abstract series (read about that here!) I needed a painting to submit to a local art show about the 250th anniversary of the United States. I have not been feeling super excited about this country or our showing in the world - especially over the last 10 years. It was hard for me to get excited about celebrating. An idea popped in my head as I was in the shower, as so many good ideas do, and I decided to make a painting based on the recent Artemis II mission. This mission made me feel deeply proud and I absolutely loved the crew, the flight control team, and the point that was made that including women in positions of leadership at NASA has a great outcome. Yay for moon joy!

I loved all the photos they sent back but the one I chose to paint is such a fun flip, showing the moon in the foreground and the earth as a crescent. It also sits on the dark black background of space making the earth look fragile. Which, of course, it is! We just have the one planet so let's do better. Seriously. Especially the US. Thanks.
