abstract art
What is abstract art? Don’t ask an artist this. Trust me. We can go on and on and you’ll likely be more confused than when you started. Some people think that all paintings are abstract. Some people think nothing is abstract. But! If you want to know how I make sense of it in my own art practice, I can explain. I make abstract paintings without a plan and when I paint from a reference or a photo I draw first and I have a plan!
That’s all. Just have no plan and you can paint abstract art. Sounds simple, right? It’s so hard. I struggle so much with this. Probably it has something to do with my type A personality and love of having control of everything all the time. But we don’t need to worry about that.
This year I gave myself the challenge to create an abstract series - one painting to represent each month. Even without a plan, I still had a structure. I painted each month with a very limited palette to fit the mood of the season. These paintings will end up together in my art print calendar for 2027! I’m excited that they’re done. I’m proud of them. And I’m also so happy to be back to painting from a reference again! So much easier for me!
Here’s a sneak peak of 4 paintings - one from each season. Can you tell which months they represent?
